• Moi j'aime le cinema! A French film festival poster with these words has graced my study for a good decade or so. My love for cinema was born even earlier, while I was a child actor in two of Mrinal Sen's films - Punascha and Abasheshe - neither of which is now available for screening. Later, in adult years, I became involved with cinema again through work in short films, of which The Magic Loom - a portrayal of the Balucharee silk weavers of Bengal- holds special memories for me. Much later, yet another breeze blew into my sails when the well-known director, Aparna Sen, expressed an interest in filming The Japanese Wife.
